Abandoned friends...

There's this thing I started doing a while ago without having a clear purpose ... something about lonely bicycles in the city ... could've been a great photography project if I were any kind of photographer ... maybe I'll give it another go...

The best thing I've bought in living memory:

My beloved Cybook.

Caprica

Are you excited? I know you are, because "Caprica", the prequel series for "Battlestar Galactica", is finally starting up. Six months ago they released the pilot episode and it was pretty amazing - it had virtual reality pagan rituals, urban terrorism, brainwashed self-important teenagers with too much power, unholy creation, a pre-pubescent Bill Adama, and Eric Stolz!

Last week they re-aired a PG version of the pilot, with improved CG but no topless virtual orgy girls - that's OK, some people prefer improved CG to boobies - and this Friday we expect episode two. You have enough time to catch up.

(Sorry, for some reason the narrator seems to think he's reading a sneakers commercial)

Lt. Governor Andre Bauer

This man is amazing - a true, shameless fascist in action:

South Carolina, my prayers are with you.

Best. Mugshot. Ever.

Pinocchio "I've got no strings"

I DARE YOU to only watch this once:

<

This sequence is an excellent demonstration of how the idea of "subtext" often confuses us into thinking that we're dealing with something expendable, when in fact it is the main thing the piece is about, and the "text" is only the cover for it. You can clearly see this in Pinocchio's acting and the change of his attitude as he goes through the song.

By the way, someone here made the bizarre choice to put Frank Thomas and Bill Tytla animations together in the same sequence.

"Always read something that will make you look good
if you die in the middle of it."

In the last few months I'm reading classic books that I've managed to miss out on by being a lazy little wise-ass in my twenties. As embarrassed as I am of only now getting around to them, I have to admit that I really wasn't smart enough to appreciate most of them before.

Right now I'm reading "Catch 22" and surprisingly not managing to connect to it at all. For years I've been so sure that it'sexactly the kind of book I'd go crazy for.
I'm also listening to "East of Eden" as an audiobook and it's blowing my mind. I expect to become a big Steinbeck fan. I read "Cannery Row" at some point when I was a teenager, but it didn't stick. Like I said, lazy little wise-ass.

Modern Family

This week's big discovery. I have separate rants about some the characters, but I'll start with the trailer:

I'm not with Coco.

Seriously, are we supposed to fight now for the right to be entertained by Conan O'brien? He stopped being funny a long time ago. In fact, NBC waited for him to become almost as un-funny as Jay Leno before they let him have his show. So no, I'm not with Coco. I am, as always, with Bill.

The Life and Times of Tim

Stream of consciousness: the voice acting of the teenagers in "Fantastic Mr Fox" reminded me of another brilliant thing that happened last year - the series "The Life and Times of Tim". Again, not everyone's taste, but clearly a masterpiece, and the best "badly drawn" character design since "King of the Hill". You can absolutely visualize every detail of the real-life person they had in mind.

Fantastic Mr Fox

Now this is not a film for you mainstream children out there, you have to be in touch with the mustard yellow stains in your soul to enjoy it. Me, I fell in love.
